STOLEN TREASURES
Deep within the forest of Northern Cambodia lies a labyrinth of sacred temples carved from stone. The great stone figures have witnessed centuries of life and death, including the bloody rule of the Khmer Rouge. Today they are the target of a little-known war that is raging in the heart of Cambodia.
In the cover of night, ancient statues and carvings are being chiseled from the temple walls-- only to surface in the thriving black market of the art world.
With the help of UNESCO, which declared Angkor a World Heritage Site in the 1990's, international teams are working to preserve the physical and spiritual integrity of the temples. Many of those working to protect Angkor narrowly survived the Khmer Rouge themselves. Now they must fight to protect the ancient heart and soul of the Khmer people. "Take it away, and you take away the spirit of the people."
