Meet Dolly

Film Project:

  • Moluccan Cockatoo
  • Female
  • Age: 19
  • Location:  Santa Barbara, California

Dolly was captive-born and purchased by a man with a parrot collection.  Moluccans require a great deal of attention, mental stimulation and patience.  After only three years, Dolly was put up for adoption. In her new home, Dolly repeatedly called out the phrase she had heard over and over from her original owner: ā€œIā€™m going to kill you, bird!ā€  To see video of Dolly, click here!

In the Wild:

  • Moluccan Cockatoos  are found only on the Indonesian islands known as the Moluccas or Spice Islands.
  • Moluccans are the largest of the white cockatoos ā€“ and they have one of the loudest calls in the parrot world.
  • Moluccans reach sexual maturity at 5-6 years and have an average lifespan of 65+ years (the oldest on record was reported to be 125 years-old by a private owner in England).
  • Moluccan Cockatoos are a highly endangered species.  In the 1980s, an estimated 74,509 individuals were exported from Indonesia to supply the pet trade. Today there is still some pressure from poaching, but they are also threatened by loss of habitat.
