About Argo Films
ArgoFilms is dedicated to producing television programming that makes a difference. Our films have won six National Emmys (11 nominations), a duPont Columbia Award for journalism, multiple Genesis, CINE Golden Eagles, Missoula, Christopher, USA, Jackson Hole, and countless international awards from New Zealand to Japan.
It is our mission to inspire understanding and compassion through the medium of film. As champions of endangered life, we attempt to provide a voice for those who have none – be it endangered birds, chimpanzees in captivity or people compromised by a changing world.
As a producer, director, writer and editor, Allison Argo has traveled the globe searching for gorillas in the Impenetrable Forest, combing the Amazon for endangered frogs and scouring the underbelly of Bangkok in search of displaced elephants.
Her first documentary THE URBAN GORILLA, which Argo produced, directed and wrote, was broadcast by National Geographic. This compelling look at gorillas under human care earned the prestigious duPont-Columbia Silver Baton, a Genesis Award and was nominated for two national Emmys.
For her second film, KEEPERS OF THE WILD (a one-hour National Geographic PBS Special) Argo won a national Emmy for directing. THE LAST FROG, again for National Geographic, also won a national Emmy, 'Best of Festival' at the Missoula International Wildlife Film Festival, as well as major awards from Jackson Hole and Japan. Other projects which Argo produced/directed/wrote for National Geographic include films shot in Cambodia, Peru, Africa, Australia, Chile, Canada and Sri Lanka. THE SECRET LIFE OF CATS, a look at our bond with domestic cats and where it has gone awry, received a national Emmy in 1999, as well as major awards from Jackson Hole, Japan, and Missoula.
For PBS, Argo has made numerous films, including: FROGS: THE THIN GREEN LINE; WISDOM OF THE WILD; EXTRAORDINARY DOGS; and CRASH: A TALE OF TWO SPECIES, which received a national Emmy nomination. CHIMPANZEES: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY received a National Emmy in 2007, a Genesis Award, Best of Festival at the CINE International Festival, and 1st Place at the US Int’l Film Festival. This ground breaking film took a hard look at the thousands of chimpanzees living in North America.
Argo’s most recent film premiered on National Geographic in September of 2011. 9/11 WHERE WERE YOU is a heart wrenching journey into the lives of a dozen 9/11 survivors.
THE URBAN ELEPHANT, for which Argo won two national Emmys – one for Outstanding Documentary and the other for Directing – profiled 10 elephants living in captivity. This landmark film, for PBS and Nat Geo, was the inspiration for her current project, THE STORY OF DAO.
For the upcoming theatrical feature THE STORY OF DAO, Argo recently completed a six-week scout in Thailand. In the spirit of the beloved tale of Black Beauty, this deeply touching story follows an elephant through fifty years of her life. Alternately heartbreaking and uplifting, The Story of Dao is sure to instill compassion and respect for one of the world’s most intelligent, sensitive and endangered creatures.
While all of her films target a primetime audience, Argo is also devoted to inspiring the next generation. She has given numerous presentations to museums, schools and venues around the world, including the California Academy of Sciences, the American Embassy in London and the National Zoo. ArgoFilms is located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
